New Orleans and Safety

Do’s and Don’ts

Although New Orleans is much less dangerous than is commonly believed, as in all big cities, and especially during
a large public event it makes sense to stay safe. Here are some things to keep in mind.

-Avoid carrying a lot of equipment, stick with a camera, lens and a small bag
-Avoid long lenses, camera vests, etc
-Avoid wearing expensive jewelry
-Act like you belong
-Avoid streets where there are not many people especially at night
-Be especially careful in tourist areas and on streets at the edges of crowds
-Do not go into cemeteries especially at night.
-Watch your wallet and keep it in a front pocket
-Do not carry a purse or handbag
-Keep credit cards and drivers license out of your wallet and keep a little cash
-If you are robbed SAY NOTHING and avoid eye contact
-If you are robbed STAY CALM hand over your property.
-NEVER EVER fight for property or talk to a mugger
-Avoid talking to street hustlers
-If you are uneasy in poorer neighborhoods let us know we will make suggestions
-If you photograph a mime tip the person
-Avoid photographing the police except from a distance
-Do not talk back to a cop, never. This can land you in jail.
-Do not get arrested, you will be in jail all weekend.
-We can not bail you out, make certain you have a credit card for that.
-Canal Street and St Charles are typically the most dangerous
-Be very careful driving during Carnival

For those of you staying the the CBD or French Quarter, during parade days these area get crowded and its difficult to get around. It can be hard to get to your hotel. Talk to your concierge about how to negotiate the closed streets to get to your hotel with the least amount of trouble.
